Breath of the Moon

Created from original photographs of kelp and seaweed gathered along the shores of Haida Gwaii, Breath of the Moon transforms the intricate forms of marine life into a richly layered symmetrical composition. Through reflection and repetition, twisting fronds, air bladders, and flowing structures merge into patterns that seem both ancient and newly emerging.

Inspired by the inter-tidal zone, a living coastal ribbon sustained by the breath of the moon, the design reflects a landscape shaped by the continual rhythm of tides, currents, and storms. Cast ashore and rearranged by the sea, fragments of kelp and seaweed reveal hidden structures, unexpected symmetries, and relationships that often go unnoticed beneath the ocean's surface.

Deep blues, weathered golds, muted greens, and soft earth tones echo the colours of kelp forests, drift lines, and coastal waters. As the eye moves across the composition, forms appear and dissolve, inviting contemplation of the unseen connections linking shoreline, sea, and time.
